The Best French Fries! (Always Gluten Free)

My absolute favorite french fry recipe! This low cost treat is a crowd pleaser and super easy to make.

My stepsons are obsessed with Five Guys fries. No wonder, they’re the perfect combo of crispy, salty, earthy and delicious. They’re also pricey (Uber eats here has a large priced at $9.35… plus tax, delivery fees, and tip, you’re looking at a $20 order of fries).

I always find restaurant copycat recipes to be kind of meh- but this one is actually amazing. It’s also super easy, cheap, and of course, gluten free. For a healthier option, use an air fryer. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

• 4-5 large russet potatoes

• Peanut or canola oil for frying. Apparently Five Guys uses peanut oil. My family and I actually prefer the way they taste with canola oil.

• Salt

• Garlic Powder

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Pick the Right Potatoes

Five Guys uses russet potatoes for their fries, prized for their high starch content. Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly, but don’t peel them—leaving the skin on adds texture and flavor.

2. Cut into Fries

Slice the potatoes into sticks about ¼-inch thick. Keep them uniform for even cooking. If you love the extra-long fries like Five Guys, aim for longer potato sticks.

3. Rinse and Soak

Place the cut fries in a large bowl of cold water to remove excess starch, which prevents them from sticking together and helps them get crispy. Let them soak for at least 45 minutes, or even overnight if you have time.

4. Par-Cook the Fries

Heat peanut oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to about 300°F (150°C). Remove the fries from the water, pat them dry with a clean towel, and fry them in batches for 2-3 minutes. They should be softened but not browned. Remove and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.

5. Double-Fry for Crispy Perfection (this part is super important!)

Increase the oil temperature to 400°F (200°C). Fry the cooled, par-cooked fries in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-4 minutes. Drain and immediately sprinkle with kosher salt.

6. Toss with Salt

Toss your hot fries with a mix of garlic powder and a little extra salt. If you want Cajun style, swap out the garlic for some Cajun seasoning.
